What Are You Thankful For?

Every year in November, North Coast Credit Union holds the annual Thankful fundraiser. Our staff and members make donations towards local food banks and we match individual donations up to $500! Donations will be sent to the local food banks. In Sedro-Woolley donations will be sent to Helping Hands Food Bank. In Mount Vernon donations will be sent to Community Action of Skagit County. Donations made in our Dupont and Bellingham branches will be sent to the Bellingham Food Bank and in Ferndale donations will be sent to the Ferndale Food Bank.

Did you know 20% of Skagit(1) and Whatcom(2) residents regularly visit a food bank? To put those numbers in perspective, that's over 69,000 of our neighbors who rely on food banks.

A core pillar of North Coast Credit Union's community impact is in making sure the community has access to the healthy food they need to sustain themselves. The majority of working age Washingtonians living in poverty are working or actively looking for work(3). Many work more than one job. 1 in 6 Washington kids live in a household challenged with putting enough food on the table and half the people on SNAP benefits are kids.

There is no better way to provide for our hungry neighbors than through our food banks, especially when people are struggling financially. Access to good food is important to overcoming and staying out of poverty. Adults can't stay healthy if they are substituting fresh produce for cheap processed foods. Children can't pay attention in school if they are filled with sugar or distracted by hunger pains.

We raise funds for local food banks and food programs through the Take A Bite For Skagit fundraiser and the Thankful fundraiser every year. Raising funds for the hungry people in our community is especially important during this time of the year when the need is the greatest. Many food banks use their funds to buy what is not donated, and that is mostly fresh fruits and vegetables. Local and regional farmers offer deeply discounted prices for food banks making your donation provide for so many people.

Stop by any of our branches now through November 30th. Let us know what you are Thankful for and add a Thankful Leaf to our Thankful Tree. If you would like, make a matched donation!
