Identity Theft: What is Your Liability

Orange and white safety cone with white text on orange background to the right that reads Identity Theft: What is Your Liability?

If a thief stole your debit card do you know what your liability is? For most signature-based Visa transactions it's nothing as long as you haven't been careless. If you wait until after 60 days of receiving your statement, liability can be unlimited.

If your credit card was stolen, you still have no liability as long as you report the loss or theft before it is used. Be sure to call immediately when you discover your card is missing. Also, make sure to keep numbers to report a loss or theft in a safe place other than your wallet.
